Xylan 1070
The general-purpose Xylan for flange bolting: a resin-bonded PTFE dry film with corrosion inhibitors, formulated for threaded parts. It lowers make-up and break-out torque and keeps joints easy to open. Usually blue.

What it is
How Xylan 1070 protects the joint.
01PTFE in a resin binderPTFE particles in a resin binder, sprayed and oven-cured. The resin bonds the film to the steel; the PTFE gives a slippery, water-repellent surface.
02Lower torque, no gallingThe PTFE lowers friction in the thread, which reduces make-up and break-out torque and prevents galling when the nut is tightened.
03Part of a systemCorrosion protection comes from the whole system – we apply Xylan 1070 over zinc phosphate, or over a zinc layer when more protection is needed.
Applications
Where we use it.
01Refinery and chemical flangesThe standard choice for coated stud bolts and nuts in process plants.
02Higher service temperaturesThe 1000 series withstands higher temperatures than the waterborne 142X series.
03Joints that must come apartFlanges opened at every shutdown, where seized nuts cost time.
Layer thickness
Thickness, fit and threads.
Layer thickness
≈ 25µm
A thin film, in the order of 25 µm (1 mil), so standard threads and nuts keep their fit – no oversize-tapped nuts as with hot-dip galvanizing.
| Layer | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Zinc phosphate | Conversion layer: bonding and base corrosion protection |
| Zinc layer (option) | Extra corrosion protection under the topcoat |
| Xylan 1070 topcoat | Low friction, sealing, colour |
How it is applied
From bare steel to coated part.
01CleanDegreasing and, depending on the system, blasting.
02PretreatmentZinc phosphate – or a zinc layer for extra protection.
03Xylan topcoatSprayed in a thin, even film.
04Oven cureThermal cure makes the film hard and bonded.
FAQ
Questions we get about Xylan 1070.
- Is Xylan 1070 the same as “PTFE-coated”?
- Yes, in daily use. “PTFE-coated” bolts usually have a Xylan or similar fluoropolymer dry film.
- Why blue?
- Blue is the usual colour for 1070 on flange bolting. Other colours are possible for colour coding.
- What salt-spray hours does it reach?
- That depends on the pretreatment and thickness of the system. We give the figure for the system you order, not for the grade name.
- Do I need other torque values?
- Yes. PTFE makes the thread more slippery: the same torque gives more preload. Never use values for uncoated bolts.
