Geomet 500
A chromium-free zinc-aluminium flake coating with an integral lubricant. Applied without electrolysis, so it suits high-strength fasteners. Friction coefficient 0.15 ± 0.03 without a separate topcoat.

What it is
How Geomet 500 protects the joint.
01Zinc flake, not platingZinc and aluminium flakes in an inorganic binder, applied by dip-spin or spray and cured. No electrolysis is involved.
02Integral lubricantThe lubricant is built in, giving a friction coefficient of 0.15 ± 0.03 without a separate topcoat.
03Chromium-freeNo hexavalent chromium and no cadmium.
Applications
Where we use it.
01High-strength fastenersBolts and screws where electroplating would bring a hydrogen-embrittlement risk.
02Automotive and railWidely specified by vehicle and rail manufacturers.
03Thin, uniform protectionParts where hot-dip galvanizing is too thick for the thread.
Layer thickness
Thickness, fit and threads.
Layer thickness
> 24 / > 36g/m²
Zinc flake thickness is specified as coating weight. Grade A (> 24 g/m²) reaches > 720 h, grade B (> 36 g/m²) > 1.000 h to red rust in salt spray (ISO 9227 / ASTM B117).
| Grade | Coating weight | Red rust, salt spray |
|---|---|---|
| A | > 24 g/m² | > 720 h |
| B | > 36 g/m² | > 1.000 h |
How it is applied
From bare steel to coated part.
01CleanBare steel, free of oil, scale and rust.
02Dip-spin or spraySmall parts in bulk by dip-spin, large parts by spray.
03CureOven cure of the binder.
04CheckCoating weight and friction checked against the specification.
FAQ
Questions we get about Geomet 500.
- Is there a hydrogen-embrittlement risk?
- Zinc flake is applied without electrolysis, which avoids the hydrogen pickup of electroplating – the reason it is used on high-strength fasteners.
- Why coating weight and not µm?
- For zinc flake the protection depends on the amount of zinc, so specifications give g/m².
- Do I need a topcoat?
- Not for lubrication: Geomet 500 has an integral lubricant and reaches 0.15 ± 0.03 without a topcoat.
- Which standard applies?
- ISO 10683 for zinc flake coatings on threaded fasteners.
