DIN 985 – Prevailing torque nuts with non-metallic insert
Dimensions, materials and applications – with the ISO counterpart ISO 10511.
DIN 985 covers thin hexagon lock nuts with a non-metallic (nylon) insert – often called nyloc nuts. The insert grips the bolt thread and creates a prevailing torque, so the nut resists working loose under vibration without a separate locking element.
The ISO counterpart is ISO 10511. The nuts are otherwise interchangeable, but the width across flats changed for M10, M12 and M14 – from 17, 19 and 22 mm to 16, 18 and 21 mm – and the nut height was changed. ISO 10511 only covers nuts with reduced loadability and no fine thread; several sizes were dropped. DIN 985 still covers fine pitch threads.
We supply DIN 985 nuts from M3 in property classes 8, 10 and 12 and in stainless A2-70, A4-70 and A4-80. Use them where vibration could loosen a standard nut. For high-temperature service, where a nylon insert is not suitable, choose an all-metal lock nut such as DIN 980.
Applications
- Assemblies exposed to vibration: pumps, fans, compressors
- Machine guards and frames
- Vehicles, cranes and lifting equipment
- Stainless assemblies in food and process plants
