DIN 931 – Hexagon head bolts, partially threaded
Dimensions, materials and applications – with the ISO counterpart ISO 4014.
DIN 931 specifies hexagon head bolts with a plain shank and a thread over part of the length, in metric coarse thread. The plain shank takes shear loads better than a thread and centres the bolt in the hole, which is why partially threaded hex bolts are used in structural connections, flanges and machine assemblies.
The ISO successor is ISO 4014. Apart from the width across flats, the two are interchangeable. ISO 4014 changed four sizes to ISO spanner sizes: M10 from 17 to 16 mm, M12 from 19 to 18 mm, M14 from 22 to 21 mm and M22 from 32 to 34 mm. Our datasheet lists both. For a fully threaded hex bolt, see DIN 933 / ISO 4017.
We supply DIN 931 / ISO 4014 bolts in the ISO property classes, in stainless and in pressure-bolting grades such as ASTM A193 B7 and EN 10269 42CrMo4 – with matching nuts and washers as one set and an EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
Applications
- Flange and pipe connections in B7 or 42CrMo4
- Steel structures and machine frames in 8.8 or 10.9
- Pumps, compressors and rotating equipment
- Offshore and coastal installations in A4 or with PTFE / Xylan coating

Questions about DIN 931.
- Does a DIN 931 bolt take the same spanner as ISO 4014?
- For most sizes, yes. Only M10, M12, M14 and M22 differ: 17 / 19 / 22 / 32 mm to DIN 931 against 16 / 18 / 21 / 34 mm to ISO 4014. The thread and length are the same.
- Can DIN 931 bolts be supplied in ASTM grades?
- Yes. Besides 8.8, 10.9, 12.9 and stainless, we supply hex bolts in ASTM A193 B7, B7M, B8 and B8M, ASTM A320 L7 and L7M, and EN 10269 42CrMo4, 25CrMo4 and X5CrNiMo17-12-2 – each with matching nuts and a 3.1 certificate.
